El primer premio fue al deportista masculino del año con Lewis Hamilton, Rafael Nadal, Eliud Kipchoge, Marc Márquez, Tiger Woods y Lionel Messi como nominados.

Dos deportistas fueron galardonados en esta categoría por primera vez en la historia, debido a a un empate en los votos; Arsene Wenger entregó el premio a Hamilton e instantes después, se anunció que Messi también lo recibió, aunque no estuvo presente en la ceremonia.
